Art A Catalyst For Change: 2018 Culmination Events!

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month and I am thrilled to share that we had over one thousand students participate in our Art A Catalyst for Change culmination events this month across all 5 boroughs. Art A Catalyst for Change is a New York City Council initiative, which I was proud to spearhead, that provides after-school programming at select middle and high schools located where high incidences of gun violence occur.

It is so important that we remind young people early and often that they have the power to affect change in their communities! Young people are already leading the way in communities across the country and we must continue to give them resources and support, like art activism programs, to further cultivate their leadership!!!

Thank you to my Council colleagues for their leadership and support of this initiative: Speaker Corey Johnson and Council Members Debi Rose, Alicka Samuel, Robert E. Cornegy Jr., Mark Treyger, Inez Barron, Jumaane D. Williams, Bill Perkins, Diana Ayala, Fernando Cabrera, Vanessa L. Gibson, Andy King, Donovan Richards, Jimmy Van Bramer,  and Adrienne Adams.

Another major thank you to our partners: 2020 Vision for Schools, Inc./Thrive Collective, Museum of the Moving Image, Black Spectrum Theatre Company, Sundog Theatre, Inc. BRIC Arts, and The Bronx Museum of Arts.

Our young people are so incredibly TALENTED and we have a RESPONSIBILITY to nourish those GIFTS and show them how they can use them to give back to their communities!!! Photo highlights of the culmination events below!
