4/1 deadline: Brooklyn Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Scholarship Awards for Graduating Seniors

Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is the premier African-American family organization founded in 1938 to provide children with educational and cultural opportunities needed to enrich and strengthen their character and personal commitment toward the betterment of their communities. One of the objectives of the Brooklyn Chapter is to assist youth in the Brooklyn/Staten Island community through chapter programs aimed at increasing academic success and educational opportunities. The Brooklyn Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is offering two $5,000 awards ($1,250 annual award over four years) to African-American students. The Gwendolyn Bourne Scholarship will be awarded to high scholastic students and the Karen Marshe Scholarship will be awarded to high achieving or talented students. The applicant must:
• Be a graduating high school senior who attends a Brooklyn or Staten Island high school
• Reside in Brooklyn or Staten Island
• Have applied for college admission
• Have demonstrated exemplary achievement in the areas of leadership and service in the community
• Maintain good academic standing (B/3.0 average or better) while attending a four-year
college full-time

Students wishing to apply for the Brooklyn Chapter’s scholarship awards must complete the enclosed (Scholarship Application Web Package), which is to be accompanied by (1) a counselor recommendation, (2) an official transcript, (3) a typed personal statement, and (4) proof of community service hours, if applicable. This material must be postmarked by April 1, 2018 and mailed to:

3/21 deadline: Discovery Guide Volunteer Program

Based in our Education Department at the New York Aquarium, Discovery Guides are seasonal volunteers (14 – 21) who receive training in customer service and basic interpretation. Discovery Guides focus on a select group of visitor experiences and, in turn, gain experience with teaching, leadership, public speaking, and learn about animals and the wild places they inhabit!

Discovery Guides who successfully complete the program will be eligible for other volunteer opportunities at the New York Aquarium.

Participants must be 14 years old and have graduated from Middle School at time of submitting application to participate.

Law Enforcement Exploring provides educational training programs for young adults on the purpose, mission, and objectives of law enforcement. The program also provides career orientation experiences, with the primary goal of helping young adults choose a career path within law enforcement, and to challenge them to become responsible citizens of their communities.

We are recruiting for both of our signature corps: the Love Where You Live Corps, which trains Corps Members for jobs related to sustainable buildings and communities; and the Urban Farm Corps which trains Corps Members for jobs related to sustainable agriculture. All Corps Members are enrolled in AmeriCorps, and have access as Corps Members and graduates to our full suite of wrap-around services, including career counseling and professional development, and on-site social workers.

 

To be eligible, applicants must

  • Be 18-24 years old
  • Live in a NYCHA development
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

 

In addition to referring applicants to us, partners can share the flyer with their listservs, post the flyers in their offices and centers, and help spread the word on social media. If the council member has any upcoming community meetings, that would also be an amazing opportunity to spread the word. We encourage all of the above!

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our 2017 Free Summer Two Week Intensive Leadership and Debate Training Program! We are currently recruiting Middle school, High School and College-aged young women and girls who wish to the gain necessary leadership and debate skills to excel in academic and extracurricular activities.

BALI’s Summer Intensive Leadership and Debate Training Program:

  • Encourages young women and girls to take leadership roles in their local and global communities.
  • Fosters awareness of social issues on a local, national and international level.
  • Encourages spiritual and intellectual growth through various workshops and activities.
  • Provides participants with opportunists to network with women in a multitude of fields, exposing them to opportunities for internships and employment.
  • Utilizes debate training activities to enhance research and oral communication skills.
  • Establishes mentoring relationships, support, and referrals for internships.
  • Promotes the development of sisterhood through interactive and collaborative activities.
